McCain: Stuck In Yesterday Not Right For Tomorrow October 27, 2008

Our economy is in shambles, we are involved in two wars, we are losing our competitive edge, Pakistan is on the verge of becoming a Taliban country, (consider that thought – a Taliban country with nuclear weapons), and the rest of the world is not terribly fond of us. This is no time to elect a leader who will rely only on past experience to solve future problems.
The issue in this election is one in which knowledge of the 20th century may have little bearing on problem solving in the 21st. In order for a new leader to be effective he cannot be bound by the artificial restrictions of past experiences.
.
The Republican nominee for President, John McCain, is so tied to the past he simply is not equipped to handle the increasing number and intensity of problems with which the next President will be faced. His computer and high tech illiteracy is a clear indicator of intellectual laziness. He has convinced himself that he has so much experience that he need not learn anything new. He is sure that whatever the problem, his experience will offer the solution.
Senator McCain is about two years older than I am. I think he is too old for the office he seeks. Not old in the sense of years but old in the sense of inquisitiveness. When one no longer cares about how things work, and new things keep coming, how can that person repair those things that break.
Barack Obama is a man unbound by the paradigms of the cold war and the politics of the 20th century. He offers a freshness of insight and foresight that hasn’t been seen since The “New Frontier” of the 1960 Kennedy administration. He is a man of ideas, of new approaches and one who understands how political gridlock serves no one. As a long time political observer and insider I have placed my faith in Mr. Obama, a faith based on experience and my own curiosity. I think the Senator from Illinois will not disappoint us. Most certainly he will challenge us — I hope he will inspire us.
Governor Palin Outed As Closet Elitist October 23, 2008

If the McCain campaign and Sarah Palin’s handlers had any sense they could have used her need for campaign clothing to their advantage. Instead of spending $150,000 on clothing at Neiman Marcus she could have strengthened her “Hockey Mom” image by refusing to shop in places that “Joe the Plumber’s” wife couldn’t afford. The McCain campaign could have scored beaucoup points with the public by inviting the news media to go on a shopping trip with Governor Palin, a trip to Target, Kohl’s or Sears. I’ll bet she could have purchased everything she needed in those stores for under $2,000 and still looked good.
What this says about Governor Palin is that at heart she’s a Neiman Marcus mom not a hockey mom. At heart she is a elitist. If she was really “just one of you” she would have looked into a camera and said, “The campaign has offered to buy me some new clothing ‘cause I left Alaska in such a hurry and don’t have much with me. They said I could buy my clothing anywhere, even Neiman Marcus, but y’know, I’ve always bought our family’s clothing at stores like Target and Sears. I got to be Governor dressed that way, why should I change now? God bless those who can afford Neiman Marcus but I think my Sears clothing will do just fine, and I’ll pay for it myself. Why don’t you (the news media) come shopping with me?” ….and the cameras could have followed her around the ubiquitous “Big Sale” signs at Kohl’s.
Can you imagine the positive publicity she would have received? She could have solidified her position as a “common, ordinary, everyday woman.” She would have been the subject of praise not criticism. But, when you secretly desire to make a fashion statement, to have people recognize the labels on your clothing and oooh and ahhh over your new jacket, there is no way you can resist. Governor Palin (and the Republican National Committee) you’ve just been outed as a closet elitist and just another duplicitous politician whose words don’t match their actions. Oh bother.
McCain: Organ Transplants Are Luxuries October 19, 2008

In the last Presidential debate Republican Candidate John McCain observed that cosmetic surgery and transplants are luxury health insurance items. He indicated that people don’t need, “Gold plated, Cadillac insurance policies that cover cosmetic surgery and transplants and all of that.” In other words, there is no real difference between removing an unsightly wrinkle and saving a life with a heart transplant. A You Tube clip of the comment can be found at (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=snGr0JcS2xw&feature=related).
I’m sure the hundred thousand people on the organ transplant waiting list along with their families and friends are buoyed by McCain’s commitment to them. If he really believes that a wart and a diseased kidney should be treated the same then he is totally out of touch and living in a world far different from the one I know.
About thirteen months ago I received a new heart at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida — the entire procedure was paid for by Medicare. Will a President McCain change that? Will a President McCain also change Medicare so that it no longer pays for life saving anti-rejection drugs, too?
Apparently the news media missed McCain’s comment but if you review the debate section on health care plans you’ll easily find it. I don’t know of anyone who ever died because a wrinkle was not removed but I do know that thousands of people have died waiting for organ transplants.
McCain’s comment is a clear indication of his total disconnect with the realities of today’s society. Organ donation/transplantation is one of the most important issues facing us today and for it to be treated in such a cavalier fashion is reprehensible.
Why Did McCain Meet With A Russian Mobster? October 10, 2008

If you believe in guilt by association, ergo Barack Obama is guilty of something because he attended some meetings with 1960’s style domestic terrorist William Ayres, then you must believe that John McCain is closely tied to the Russian Mafia and needs to explain himself to the American Public. To follow the example of the McCain campaign, we should demand that John McCain and his campaign manager reveal exactly what went on in meetings they had with a certain Russian billionaire of a very shady reputation.
According to a Friday January 25th, 2008 story in the Washington Post, (www.washingtonpost.com story by Jeffrey H Birnbaum and John Solomon WP staff writers) “A top political adviser in Sen. John McCain’s presidential campaign helped arrange an introduction in 2006 between McCain and a Russian billionaire whose suspected links to anti-democratic and organized-crime figures are that the U.S. government revoked his visa.” Rick Davis, who is now McCain’s campaign manager, helped set up the encounter between McCain and Russian aluminum magnate Oleg Deripaska in Switzerland during an international economic conference. At the time, Davis was working for a lobbying firm and seeking to do business with the billionaire.
There is no evidence that McCain did anything for Deripaska after they met at a social gathering over drinks and dinner. Deripaska was grateful for the introduction, writing a thank-you note to Davis and his partner and offering to assist them in a subsequent business deal, according to a copy of the note obtained by The Washington Post.
Mark Salter, a spokesman for McCain, said that meetings with Deripaska took place during official trips abroad by senators and that McCain did nothing improper. “Any contact between Mr. Deripaska and the senator was social and incidental,” he added.
Salter said the contact between McCain and Deripaska did not constitute a “private meeting”; both men were part of larger gatherings.
Do I believe John McCain is a Russian Mobster? Of course not — but if you believe in guilt by association as the McCain campaign so obviously does, then his association with Deripaska is a transgression worthy of the same innuendo, criticism and questioning as they have directed at Obama in the Ayres affair.
It’s all stupid! The McCain/Palin ticket is so bereft of ideas, so afraid of reality, so mired in the selfishness of winning, that they have abandoned an honest exchange of ideas and become mean-spirited, vindictive and reckless as they lurch from tactic to tactic in search of a strategy that fits.
The McCain/Palin ticket is shameless and transparent in their bigotry and in their willingness to allow the nation to dash itself on the rocks of financial ruin rather than find a way to seek repair and rejuvenation. The new McCain/Palin strategy is born of desperation and fed by hubris. If this is an indication of the kind of leadership they offer then Bush/Cheney was a ride in the park.
